Quick Bio

My name's Shannon. I'm a 21 year old recent college graduate from the state of Maine. I'm pretty goofy, sarcastic and I'm obsessed with The Office. On DeviantArt I'm mostly a vexel artist, although I have dabbled in photomanipulation. Feel free to watch me, comment or note me.

Journal

I have a job interview this afternoon. This is my first real job interview, so as you'd expect I'm a bit nervous. And of course they give me less than a day's notice before the interview. Since 4pm yesterday I've been scrambling around putting together a little print portfolio and trying to get rid of an enormous zit on the side of my head.

This job is for a design position for a little local newspaper. It's just 15 minutes away and it's only 25 hours a week, so I could do some freelance work as well. Of course right after I got the call for this interview monster.com found a listing for basically my dream job. I applied, but we'll see what happens with that.

So I guess things are going alright.

------
EDIT:
Update on the job front.

So I went to the interview. I could tell within 15 minutes I REALLY didn't want this job. It's all InDesign work (InDesign + me = mortal enemies), it's tedious and repetitive, and on Tuesdays I'd have to work for 12 hours. Yeah, no thank you.

Of course the reaction from my parents was basically if I got the job I'd have to take it.

So of course what happens? I get the job. They just called and told me to come in tomorrow. 25 hours a week for $15.50 an hour - and they're expecting me to stay for a while.

The good news is I guess this makes me a real "graphic designer" now. And I have money, which is always good.

I shouldn't feel pissed off but I really do.

same with me!

Good luck with your job interview! I wish someone I'd get a job interview, freelance work doesn't pay the bills hehee

Make money and spend the extra time looking for freelance. Sometimes you gotta wade through the crap in order to do what you really want.

Phil rules. Do you?
Congrats anyway :D It would be good to have a go at it and get experience.. even if it's so you know what not to look for next time. You can always quit if it's really bad :D
Make sure your contract allows you to actually do freelance on the side, mine doesn't (oh diddams, I can't work 24/7, thats a shame)
Yeah.. the worst thing is to do what you don't feel like doing. But good things are: experience and, of course, money :)

I did that, spent days and days on nothing but indesign, its enough to drive you mad!

Yeah, it's probably the most boring program a graphic designer can work with. And it's hard to bring in creativity to newspaper layouts. They told me that at some point I could redo the headers, but they have such strict printing regulations that I couldn't do much. :/

True, hopefully I'll just stay for 6 months or so until I have enough money to move away and get a better job. :)

Actually, I told one of the women I'm working with that I'm trying to get freelance work and she told me that she's been a freelance graphic designer for 20 years. She even offered to help me find some clients, which is exciting. :D
